Unit 1 접속부사 - 부사이면서, 접속사처럼 두 개의 문장을 연결하는 역할을 함
Ⅰ. 예시
1. for example(=for instance) 예를 들면
Wear something simple; for example, a skirt and blouse.
2. such as 예컨대 They exports a lot of fruits, such as oranges and lemons.
Ⅱ. 역접. 대조
3. however(= yet, still, nevertheless) 하지만
Everyone needs some fat in his or her diet. However, too much fat is bad for you.
The weather was terrible. Still, we had a good holiday.
4. in contrast 대조적으로
The material culture is made up of all the physical objects that people make and give meaning to. In contrast, nonmaterial culture consists of human creations that are not physical.
5. on the other hand 다른 한편으로는
Computer games develop many skills. On the other hand, they prevent kids from getting enough exercise.
6. on the contrary 그와는 반대로
There was enough food; water, on the contrary, was running short.
Ⅲ. 첨가
7. besides(=moreover, futhermore, in addition, what is more) 게다가
It's too late to go out; besides, it's raining.
When you laugh, your whole body becomes stronger. In addition, when you laugh, your brain works better.
8. also ...도 또한 We were hopeful about the outcome of the meeting.
9. then 그 뒤에; 게다가 I'll take a bath; then I'll eat.
Ⅳ. 인과. 결론
10. therefore(=thus, accordingly, consequently) 따라서, 그러므로
I think. Therefore, I am.
11. as a result(=as a consequence) 결과적으로
Without rain forest, the air will fill up with more CO2. As a result, the weather will be hotter.

13. in brief(=in short, I sum) 요약하면
In brief, you should have accepted the responsibility.

Walking is a cheap, safe, and enjoyable form of exercise.
Ⅴ. 비교
15. similarly(=in the same way, likewise) 마찬가지로
Cars must stop at red lights; similarly, bicycles should stop, too.
Until you eat the st다 and get it digested in your body, you can't benefit from it. In the same way, books must be absorbed t do you any good.
Ⅵ. 재진술
16. that is (to say); in other words; to put it another way; namely 즉, 다시 말해서
She will leave Korea in four days, that is to say, next Monday.
He said he was too busy; in other words, he wasn't interested.

17. otherwise 그렇지 않다면
I left home five minutes early; otherwise, I would have missed the train.
Unit 2 상관 접속사
18. both A and B: A, B 둘 다 She both plays the piano and sings.
19. either A or B: A, B둘 중 하나 Either you or I have to do the dishes.
20. neither A nor B: A, B둘 다 ...아닌 He is neither rich nor handsome.
21. not A but B: A가 아니고 B What he needs is not money but love.
22. not only A but (also) B: A뿐만 아니라 B도
Not only the pupils but also the teacher was laughing.
23. A as well as B: B뿐만 아니라 A도
He gave us money as well as food. (=He gave us not only food but also money.)
24. not A until B: B할 때까지 A하지 않다, B하고 나서야 비로소 A하다
We do not know the value of our health until we lose it.
(= Not until we lose our health, do we know the value of it.)
25. whether A or B (명사절)A인지 B인지; (부사절)A이든 B이든
I don't know whether she is glad or sorry.
Someone's got to tell her, whether it's you or me.
Unit 3 접속사
Ⅰ. 시간
26. when
1) ...할 때 When I was young, I had a great dream.
2) = whenever He is impatient when he is kept waiting.
3) = if I'll give it to you when you say "please."
4) = although He is always complaining when there's no reason to do.
27. while
1) ...하는 동안 I can't talk to anyone while I'm driving.
2)...인 반면에(=whereas) The walls are green, while the ceiling is white.
28. as
1)<때> ...하고 있을 때 He came up to me as I was speaking.
2)<이유> 가볍고 부대적인 이유 As I was tired, I soon fell asleep.
3)<양태> ...와 같이, ...대로 Do in Rome as the Romans do.
4)<비례> ...함에 따라, ...할수록 As we go up, the air grows colder.
29. since
1) ...한 이래로 I've been very busy since I came back from holiday.
2) ...이기 때문에
Since we live in the computer era, we should get used to personal computers.
30. until/ till ...할 때까지 We waited until it got dark.
31. as soon as ...하자마자
As soon as she heard the news, she began crying.
= The moment[ The minute/ The instant] she heard the news, she began crying.
= No sooner had she heard the news than she began crying.
= Hardly[Scarcely] had she heard the news when[before] she began crying.
32. each time ...할 때마다(=everytime, whenever)
The dog barks each time it sees me.
33. by the time ...할 때까지는, ...무렵에
By the time I finished my homework, it was already midnight.
Ⅱ. 이유
34. because/ since/ as ...이기 때문에
We were late because there was a lot of traffic on the way.
Since you won't help me, I must do the job myself.
As she often lies, I don't like her.
35. for 왜냐하면, ...이기 때문에 She told the truth, for she had nothing to lose.
36. now (that) 이제 ...이니까
Now that you are a high school student, you must study hard.
Ⅲ. 목적. 결과
37. so that / so (that) / (so) that ...하기 위해서(=in order that)
I didn't have lunch so that I would be hungry tonight.
You have to say NO to the good so you can say YES to the best.
38. so ... that 아주 ... 해서 ~하다 I was so angry that I couldn't speak.
39. such (a) + 형용사 + 명사 + that 아주 ...해서 ~하다
She gave such a witty answer that everyone burst out laughing.
40. (,)so that 그래서 They climbed higher, so that they could get a better view.
Ⅳ. 조건
41. if 만약...이라면; ...인지 아닌지(=whether)
I'll pay you double if you get the work finished by Friday.
He asked me if I liked Chinese food.
42. unless 만약 ...이 아니라면(=if... not)
You can't get the job unless you've got experience.
43. in case 만약 ...인 경우에는 In case anything happens, call me at once.
44. suppose/ supposing/ provided (that ) 만일...하면(=if)
Suppose you are elected President, what will you do first?
You could buy a new computer, provided you had much money.
45. as long as / so long as ...하기만 하면(=if only)
I don't care as long as you are happy.
46. once 일단 ...하면
Once you have made up your mind, you should never think of changing it.
Ⅴ. 양보
47. though/ although 비록 ...이지만
Though she is the daughter of a millionaire, she is not happy.
49. even though 비록 ...일지라도(=even if)
Even though he disliked movies, he went with his girlfriend to please her.
50. as 비록 ...일지라도(명[형.부]+as+S+V)
Much as I admire him as a writer, I do not like him as a man.
51. while/ whereas ...인 반면
John is a huge man, whereas his wife is a slender little woman.
52. no matter +의문사(=의문사+-ever)
No matter what(=Whatever) you say to Bill, he will not change his mind.
No matter how(=However) late you may be, be sure to phone me.
